There are two additional areas of excessive clearance worth talking about since they are at least partially related to the shift linkage. The shift rail bushing (1) sometimes wears out. This means the shift rail travels upwards for a small distance instead of going forwards. This slightly increases the distance of travel on forward gears and when extreme will cause the shift rail seal to fail. Contrary to some claims it is not the angle of the selector rod (6lbs of vertical force against the bushing for a 10-degree angle with a 50lbs force at the knob) that creates this wear but a chronically low lubricant level.
