There are five areas in the external linkage where excessive clearance can create slop. The most obvious ones are the shift linkage connection at the bottom of the shift lever (1) and the one at the end of the selector rod (2).

Often overlooked but very important is the shuffle pin at the transmission shift rail (3) as well as the connection of the shift bracket to the transmission (4) and to the car body (5).

Not all areas contribute equally to slop. 1,2 and 3 equally affect slop in the forward backward direction of the shift patterns but 2 and 3 are the main contributors to side to side slop. Last but not least 4 and 5 degrade the precision of the pattern regardless of the direction of the shift.
